The central aim of the programme is to prepare students from a wide range of professions and backgrounds to be leaders in Public Health.
The programme team believes that by developing and reinforcing students’ Public Health knowledge and skills base that they will have greater confidence and understanding to tackle Public Health issues and health inequalities, no matter what their professional background. We also believe that by learning together in an inter-professional environment students will build a better understanding of how different sectors can and must interact to improve the health of communities. These are basic building blocks for helping them to provide leadership in promoting the Public Health agenda.
Therefore, the programme has a number of more specific objectives that, taken together, should achieve the programme aim.
For the award, the programme will:
Construct an analysis of Public Health theory, practice and policy, and the relevant debates
Build skills in analyzing patterns of ill health and analyzing disease surveillance information, as well as how social, economic and environmental factors create unequal distributions of illness in populations
Develop competence at working at community level or at policy level to assess health needs and plan appropriate health interventions
Build skills in planning and implementing Public Health interventions as well as in influencing planning, policy and decision making for promoting the public’s health
Build skills in using research tools to assess evidence of the impact of their work, and of public policy in general, on health and
Develop the ability to design and conduct a piece of research to further the understanding and/or development of a specific area of Public Health practice.

The programme is taught using blended learning with three 6-day Intensive Schools and one 3-day Intensive school during that period. The Intensive Schools are made up of lectures, group work, workshops and one-to-one tutorials. Students are well supported between Intensive Schools by e-mail tutorials and are provided with very comprehensive study materials and reading matter. Our Teaching Team aims to deliver a programme of the highest quality and to use innovative and up-to-date methods for teaching and learning. A total of 180 credits are required to gain the MSc Public Health Degree.
